Quick Info for Parents

How to get Rolls of Crafting Paper for FREE

Your local newspaper is printed on huge spools of paper that look like  the photo on the right ~

When the spool is running low on paper, they don't let it run completely out. When they replace it with a new one, the old one still has LOTS of paper left on it. They will have lots of different sizes too.
They sell these rolls VERY VERY cheap (less than 10 dollars and often only $1.00-$3.00 dollars) OR very often you can get them for FREE!

So call your local newspaper and ask them if they sell the ENDS OF THE NEWSPAPER ROLLS.

If you aren't asking for a truck load and just want a few, they will often just let you have them, which is what the friendly woman at our local newspaper did! I fit as many as my trunk would hold and am giving them to friends!

There is enough paper on each roll for a year of crafting!  I also use them on the floor underneath if I am concerned about making a mess with what I am doing! Ohhhhhh the possibilities!

Another Magical Puff Paint Recipe

Combine the following in a little bowl and then portion onto a paperplate

Equal parts of:

Water
Salt
Self Rising Flour
Mix salt & flour.  Add water. Stir well.

Then add:
Food Coloring
Glitter (optional)
Stir well.

~I used 1 cup of all 3 ingredients.

~ I divided it up onto 6 paper plates.

~We added 2-3 drops of food coloring to each plate and stirred.

~We added glitter to a chosen few of the colors (I let the girls decide which ones.)

~Each creation was microwaved for 10-25 seconds or until puffed and hardened.

(time depends on microwave power and how thick the little artist applies the paint)

Home-made Scratch and Sniff Paint

I wanted something simple and fun for our girls to do one day while I was busy doing other things.  I had seen the idea of making your own Scratch N Sniff paint out of Kool-aid mix from an article a while back, and it has been in the back of my brain for awhile now.  It finally made it from the back of my brain onto my "Things I Want To Do This Summer Doozy List," which really helped make it a reality today.
IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!  All you have to do is mix 2 Tablespoons of water to one packet of Kool-Aid mix, and voila...you have Scratch N Sniff paint.  Adding the water and mixing it up is part of the fun, so make sure you let the kids help with this part.  My girls just could not believe how yummy it smelled, and neither could my girlfriend and I.  We kept saying to each other "Wow, that smells so good!"  It smelled like a fruit basket in my house while they were all busy painting their little hearts out.
I thought the end product was beautiful.  I was surprised with how vibrant the colors were, I loved all the different hues.
We put them in my sunroom to dry and I was greeted with a whiff of fruit when I came home later in the day.  I am sure many of these pieces will be cut down to make homemade cards for friends, and we will make sure we write on them "Scratch N Sniff!!"

**make sure kids are wearing aprons or old tshirts, and be prepared for stained fingertips.  Not a huge deal, I'm sure it will fade soon:)

***This would make a very fun and unique gift for a child.  Find a basket.  Include a 6 cup muffin tin, 6 kinds of Kool-Aid, 6 paint brushes, some sponges, stencils, paper and directions.  Make a card with directions on it and tie it on with some ribbon. You or your child could even paint a little Happy Birthday message on the front of the card with Scratch N Sniff paint and instruct them to scratch n sniff it!:)

Make a Fairy House

Fairy Craft to spark the imagination

Materials:
A large rock, shells, sand, pinecones, gourds, pebbles, potpourri, flowers, leaves, little twigs anything of interest.

A great activity to inspire kids to get outside and use their imagination is fairy house building. Build them from all natural materials such as pinecones, sticks, leaves, flower petals, stones, seashells, feathers, acorns and gourds.  Construct fairy houses in backyards, in flowerbeds, in wooded areas or even on a balcony.  Many public parks and gardens allow fairy house building and create special events around the activity. Ask your local parks about it.

Here’s how to get started in your own backyard
1. Find a suitable spot.  The kids in your life will lead you to the perfect place.
2. Talk about what the fairies might like in their house. Let the child’s imagination run with this.
3. Gather some items from the yard that might work. Use only natural materials (no plastic or metal – keep this a non-littering activity.)
4. Have fun building the fairy house. Children may want to do this all themselves, and that’s OK. Just watch and enjoy the process. Trial and error is what makes the process fun.
5. Have the child talk about the various parts of the structure and what they are used for.   For example, a large stone could be the couch, a big leaf could be a slide, and an acorn top could be a bowl.
6. Add accessories such as small berries in the bowls, flower decorations, or a bit of moss or feathers on the beds.
7. This can become an addicting hobby. You and your child will now always be on the lookout for the perfect spot for a fairy house and will spy the ideal materials when taking walks.
8. This is a perfect activity for boys and girls. If the boys don’t like the idea of fairies, they can build their houses for elves, sprites, or the boy fairies.

Lastly ask your child to make up a story about a little fairy that lives in the house ~ you might just be surprised at the imaginative creativity such an activity can inspire.

Pressed Flowers

You can use pressed flowers in many different crafts. This particular technique is a good one to get kids involved in since it uses household appliances and objects in unusual ways. This makes a great Earth Day craft, summer craft, spring craft or nature craft for kids.

What you'll need:
Refrigerator
Microwave
Two out-dated telephone books
Two heavy stoneware plates
Paper towels
wild flowers

Picture
Picture
How to make it:
Cut flowers.
Place them gently into an old telephone book and place in refrigerator for two days.
Turn one stone plate face down and place paper towels in bottom center.
Gently place flowers in a single position, not touching each other.
Put another layer of paper towels over the flowers.
Put the other stoneware plate on top of the paper towels matching bottoms.
Place the plates in the microwave and cook them for 8 minutes on LOW heat.
Remove them from the microwave and let them cool thoroughly.
When they are cool, remove them from the paper towels.
If you aren't ready to use them, put them into another old telephone book and put a weight on it until you are ready to use the flowers.

Pumpkin Spice Play Dough

Wow, this is fantastic. It really does smell great, and totally looks like you are playing with pumpkin pie. Awesome! We will be playing with this right up until Thanksgiving!

Here’s the super easy recipe:
2 C Flour
1 C Salt
4 tsp. Cream of Tartar
3 tsp pumpkin-pie spice (I did 4…cuz I wanted to!)
2 C Water
2 TBL Vegetable Oil
Red and Yellow Food Coloring (the more the better!)

Combine all ingredients in a large pot. Stir on low heat until mixture starts forming a ball and will pull away from the sides. Let cool. Enjoy.

Obviously you could eat this dough and not die, but with that much salt, I can’t imagine it would taste very good!

Fairy Feeder

This is a kids version of a humming bird feeder that your kids can make all on their own, mostly. You will still need to make the drinking well for them. Since it involves using a hot glue gun and cutting the cap. If you really make it special, some faeries just might show up too!

What you will need:
empty soda or water bottle (something like the 16 oz size or smaller is great for this).
4 Pipe cleaners
lid from the bottle you are going to use
a lid slightly larger than the one from the bottle.

Cut 1 pipe cleaner in half and make two rings out if it. Be sure to over lap the pipe cleaner generously since this will be what holds the feeder.

1: loop and twist the ends of the other 3 pipe cleaners around the ring. Again making sure they are secure.

2: put the neck of the bottle through the ring of the pipe cleaner and arrange the 3 straight pipe cleaners around the bottle. Gather them at the base of the bottle and twist. If they are long enough simply make a loop out of the ends. If they are not long enough, wrap them around the second ring you made. This loop is your hanger.

3: Now for the parent's job. Make the feeding well out of the caps. See Hummingbird feeders using recycled materials for directions.

4: Your child can choose to decorate their bottle or hanger any way they choose. My son opted to leave the label on the bottle (since it is a red color it helps to attract the hummingbirds). He also chose to pick real flowers from our garden to put in some of the slots in the well. Of course this means that he will have to replace them every couple of days but this is what he wants.

Ideas for items to decorate with:
-Permanent markers
-more pipe cleaners twisted into flowers or other shapes and then twisted to the pipe cleaners up the sides. (since the pipe cleaners are metal inside I would not put them in the drinking well).
-stickers (use colors that will attract the humming birds such as red and yellow and orange)
-silk flower tops (you can hot glue them to the places where you glued the caps together to hide the glue.

Make some Nectar
Bring to a boil 1 cup water plus 1/4 cup sugar. This will kill any bacteria. Let it cool then pour it into your bottle. Screw on the cap. Keep it upside down till you are outside and ready to hang it. It will drip a bit till the vacuum forms. This is normal. For this reason I suggest you hang it from a tree rather than your patio. Also your kids won't scare the birds away every time they open the door to watch them. (be sure to wash it out with vinegar before you refill it.

Now wait for your first customer. It may take them a day or two to find your feeder, but they will. Watch for them in the morning and in the afternoon. We see them less during the heat of the day. Around here they are buzzing about till about 11am and then back again around 4 to 6pm till dark.
I hope you and your children get as much joy from this little project as we did. I just love watching my boys get excited about nature. As we watched the hummingbird, we talked about if we thought the visitor was a boy or a girl. My son said he thought it was a boy. I said that I thought it could be a girl because the bird wasn't very colorful. Usually it is the boy birds that have all the flashy color. He agreed that it was probably a girl then. We laughed and the boys giggled over how acrobatic those little birds seem. In this way we are passing on the love of the out doors to our children. They now have a vested interest to do things that are beneficial for animals and our environment.

Print out Images to Color
There are a couple ways to do this- one would be pressing CTRL and the P key at the same time to print the page-
The other way which is more exact and you can size the image is to right click on the image you want to print and when
the screen pops up click "save image as"- then save it to your desktop where you can print out just the image in the size
you want rather than a lot of extra stuff you don't.
